Building a Safe, Equal, and Compassionate New Bangladesh

“নিরাপদ অনলাইন: সমতা, সহিষ্ণুতা ও সহমর্মিতায় গড়ি নতুন বাংলাদেশ,” a key demand was raised for the Internet to be recognized as a fundamental right in Bangladesh. This call emphasizes the importance of equitable digital access, viewing the Internet as essential for personal and social development. The event highlighted the role of online safety, equality, tolerance, and compassion in building a progressive and inclusive digital environment for all citizens.

The highlight of the event was a large panel discussion,
“Recognition of Internet Access as a Fundamental Right”, featuring diverse voices from government, education, technology, and civil society. Panelists engaged deeply with the issue, exploring how recognizing internet access as a fundamental right would promote equal opportunities in education, economic participation, and social inclusion. They argued that, as Bangladesh advances technologically, the internet must be accessible to all citizens, particularly the youth, to ensure their active and safe participation in the digital world.

Panelists also discussed the challenges and practical steps toward implementing this right, such as strengthening digital infrastructure across urban and rural areas and ensuring affordable internet access for all income levels. They highlighted that internet access should not only be viewed as a tool for communication but also as a gateway to knowledge, job opportunities, and empowerment, especially for marginalized groups.

The session concluded with a collective agreement that the principles of online safety, equality, tolerance, and compassion are essential for creating a digital environment that reflects the values of a progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. The demand for internet access as a fundamental right stands as a cornerstone in this vision, symbolizing a commitment to a secure, connected, and inclusive society for all.
